Programming in Java
This course aims to provide a thorough grounding in the theory and practice of object-oriented programming in Java. No prior programming experience is assumed.

Fundamental programming skills form the basis of any further studies in computing, and are also widely needed in industry. The Java programming language is industrially relevant, and is also a relatively clean vehicle for the presentation of the underlying concepts of procedural and object-oriented programming.

On successful completion of this module, a student will be expected to be able to:

  • Demonstrate a systematic understanding of Java and its implementation of the key ideas of object and class.
  • Assess the role of types in programming languages.
  • Manipulate references in an object-oriented language.
  • Critically evaluate the use of encapsulation in software development.
  • Construct working programs in Java.
  • Define new classes, applying object-oriended design and program structuring techniques.
  • Write graphical programs using Java.
